The new TJ | Tijuana B.C Mexico

February 13, 2018

I recently went back to Tijuana to visit my mom, who recently retired and moved there last August.  I know, I know what you must be thinking, WHY or earth would she retire in Tijuana!!??  Well, that is exactly why I am finally sitting down to blog a little about this “forgotten” little city that has gotten such bad rep in past years, and for good reason. However,  please don’t let that fool you.  Tijuana has come a LOOONG way, REALLY!  I blogged a little about a trip to TJ in 2012, but since then a lot has changed.

I think I started noticing the change in 2016.  Francis and I went for a long weekend to visit some friends.  As you all know, we LOVE to eat out and try new places.  Mexico has never let me down as far as food goes, but this time the food was seriously taken to a whole other level!  A lot of new business have opened and they all have done a great job at making them look and feel amazing!  Here are a few photos from one of our trips, but I am seriously considering being a little more intentional with snapping more photos on my next visit, so stay tuned!  Meanwhile, here are a few recomendations 😉

When crossing the border, try the new San Ysidro PedWest entrance.  I crossed on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon.  Early mornings are hectic, as many are on their way to work, so avoid rush hour if you don’t want to get stuck waiting for hours!  Here is a map that helped me get around;

San Ysidro PedWest Entrance.  When leaving Mexico, it will leave you right at the Outlets, and if you want to take the Trolley, you can have one of those little yellow cars drive you to the other entrance for like $1+ (very convenient)  The new PedWest border has a special pick-up/drop-off area for Ubers, cars or taxis (I loved it!)

I call this my “mexican junk” so delicious and so unhealthy! haha

Taco time! What is there NOT to love!!?? Food Garden is one of two food truck heavens 🙂
This is where it’s at!
Wine tasting anyone!? Yes, Valle de Guadalupe is a must!

Avenida Revolucion is the main strip in downtown Tijuana.  it’s abuzz with new restaurants and a new hipster vibe.  It’s much cleaner than it used to be, although the noise remains the same and some side streets you still want to avoid.  Uber is amazing, needless to say, the best way to get around.

Colectivo 9

Is another great spot for great food 🙂

Cine Tonala was just ok in the mixed drinks department, but I’ve yet to try their food 🙂

La Espadana has amazing chilaquiles!

La Casa de Don Juan is my favorite for brunch.  It’s quaint, small, service is great and their food AMAZING!!

For my next visit I want to check out

La Justina  Known for their mixed drinks

Maiz Their food just looks delicious!
